The provinces of the Canadian governments are trying different ways of reducing the use of plastic bags. Most of the governments have raised the cost of plastic bags to 5 cents a bag to encourage shoppers to not buy the plastic bags. Other provinces such as Manitoba have completely banned plastic bags. Some provinces are using the five step plan made by Parlement du Canada to reduce the bag usage. The five steps are: 1)Ban the bag 2)Phase out the use of plastic bags bag 3)use bio-degradable bags only 4)Raise the pricing of bags 5) Educate.

There are several Canadian non-profit organizations whose goals are to reduce the use of plastic bags. These non-profit organizations are The Canadian Council of Grocery Distributors, Canadian Federation of Independent Grocers, Canadian Plastics Industry Association, Recycling Council of Ontario and Recycling Council of Canada. All of these non-profit organizations have the same goal which is to reduce the amount of plastic bags both produced and sold in Canada.
Private organizations
The Canadian Plastics Industry Association is a private organization and the voice for plastics in Canada. The Canadian Plastics Industry Association has over 2,422 companies employing 76, 530 workers. The three priorities of CPIA are to communicate the facts behind plastic manufacturing, increasing the plastic waste management options, and building on the industry's long history and achievement. CPIA facilitates the development of sustainable programs to effectively manage plastic bags including the waste of plastic shopping bags.
